I have a small booklet entitled, Breaking Free from Depression and another book Getting Unstuck that has sections on bipolar. Bipolar is one type of depression we know to have an organic base. This means that there are chemical imbalances at play that must be treated with medication. Not all depressions require medication treatment, but in my 30 years of experience, bipolar does require medication treatment to correct brain chemicals. When a person complies with medication, they typically live a very normal life, however, many patients do not comply and that is the problem. It is also important to get adequate sleep and eat well and manage stress.

There is a great deal of information on bipolar on many Internet sites like WebMD, Mayo Clinic, etc. Start to read up on the disorder. This is one type of depression that usually involves a medication approach along with therapy because it has an organic base. The Christian part relates to the actually therapy. You want to find a therapist that will support your faith and integrate it into the therapy.

I was diagnosed with bipolar depression. I went to a Psychologist at an office that deals with Christians as well as others that do not want this approach. It was awful and I had to fire the guy because he could not talk to me about my problems, it felt as if the roles were reverse and I was the Dr. and he the patient. Which this caused me more problems than before. I just would like to have someone that could help me work through my problems and help me to see the other side of my life. I live in Hampton Roads,VA so was hoping you might know someone in this area that I could talk with. I do not like to drive to far to get to an office. I would appreciate any help you have to offer me. I seem to be worse in the winter months.

Go see a mental health therapist. You can visit a community mental health center or see someone in a private group. The important thing is to get help right away as this is very treatable. There is also a national suicide hotline 1.800.273.TALK (1.800.273.8255). They can also help you with a referral. Dr. Linda

Dr. Linda, I have been taking medication for bipolar for over 15 years. I have found healing but only in small amounts (a few weeks or months at a time). I am compliant with my doctors treatment plans. I pray and seek help from my church. For a few years I ate well and exercised regularly. I am now experiencing depression at least 7-10 days a month. I feel foggy much of the time and have a hard time concentrating. I have a new Dr and counselor but feel confused as to why medication does not help me very well. I feel like I have tried hard but do not live the healthy life I have heard I can have. I feel I am doing something wrong but I don’t know what. I know there is a better way to live I just dont know how to live it. I appreciate any advice you can give me.

We are doing a show on Bipolar during June. Sleep is one other area I would make sure to regulate as it can be a factor. Talk to a therapist about what is prompting those depression days and see if you can find a pattern. Working with the meds until you feel better is also good. Keep going forward and talk to your doctor about those depression days to get a better handle on how to stabilize things. Also a physical may be good to make sure other changes aren’t contributing.
